Jim Smith

Co-Founder and Vice President of Engineering

Jim's 30-year career has been focused in leading the design and delivery of complex systems incorporating innovative electric motors and generators.  Prior to co-founding Boulder Wind Power Jim was President of Sound View Technology, an engineering consulting firm focused on innovative electric machines and advanced propulsion system engineering.  He started Sound View after seven years as Director, Motor Center of Excellence for DRS Power and Controls Technology, leading a team that developed and integrated permanent magnet electric machines for industrial (petrochemical) applications.

Prior to DRS Jim spent 22 years with General Dynamics - Electric Boat Corporation, in positions of ever increasing responsibility, most recently as Director of Engineering.  Jim's experience spans the design, construction, test, and delivery of all varieties of nuclear propulsion plant equipment in submarines from the early Los Angeles and Ohio Class ships to the most recent Virginia Class, and the LSV2 experimental submarine electric drive system.  He also led the development and installation of the largest integrated gas turbine and electric motor/variable frequency drive powered compressor trains in the liquefied natural gas industry.  Jim has been awarded over 24 United States patents where he was named the sole or co-inventor.  Jim holds a B.S. in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
